Kim looked over at Adam
and wondered what he was working on. She walked over to
find out.
"Are you helping Chloe on the financial records?"
She asked, watching him typing quickly and the screens on
his monitor kept changing.
He looked around, surprised. "No, I'm working on
something else."
She was never all that good at taking hints. "What's
in the van?"
Adam's fingers stilled and he looked down for a moment,
"I don't know."
Tony came out of his office and tried to get everyone's
attention. "Can everyone look over here for a
moment?"
Kim turned around, ignoring the rumbling in her stomach
and the sheer exhaustion she was feeling.
"Ryan Chappelle isn't coming back to CTU. He's...dead.
More information will be forthcoming."
It seemed like he wanted to give a longer speech but
stopped himself at the last moment. Immediately, people
began talking in hushed whispers.
"Didn't my dad just go off with Chappelle a half
hour ago?" Kim asked Adam.
"I don't know Kim, I don't keep track of his
movements," Adam said in a very Chloe-like way.
"What's in the van, Adam?" Kim asked, a sick
suspicion sneaking into her mind. She couldn't believe it.
Not her dad.
But, combined with the desperate chase for Saunders and
Tony's announcement a conclusion was forming.
"Jack told me to keep track of it, he didn't say
anything else." Adam said, but his voice was softer
and he was jumping to the same conclusion.
The doors to CTU opened and Jack walked in.
Kim almost walked up to him, but then she saw the look in
his eyes and the way he was slowly walking towards the
stairs. He seemed shaken, which frightened her on a deep
level. As she watched him enter Tony's office she forced
herself to look away.
"Could he have done it?" She whispered to
herself. Then she thought about the expression on his
face, like a man who had stepped further into his own
private hell.
"Kim?"
"I'm sorry, I..." But she couldn't get the
words out and walked back over to her desk, sitting and
staring without seeing the screen.
You're being silly, she thought to herself. Anything
could have happened, there could have been a gun fight, a
car accident --
Her phone rang. Inside line.
She picked up and for a few moments only heard soft
breathing and then, "Kim, I need to speak to you."
Her dad's voice was broken, there was no other way to
describe it.
"I'll be right up," she whispered, hung up the
phone and swallowed painfully.
As she walked towards the stairs she had the odd image of
water rising, covering her ankles, her knees, up to her
neck.
If she wasn't careful, she was going to drown.
