There was nothing
immediately threatening about her. To see her on the
street one might even think that she was a dancer or a
schoolteacher. She had that look, the one that made
people want to protect her, from her small shoulders to
her petite fingers.
It was only when they got close enough to see her face,
to look into her amused and yet somehow cold eyes that
they realized they'd been mistaken.
Unfortunately, that moment of recognition usually
happened right before the gunshot or the quick slice of a
knife. Leaving her victim staring up wondering how they
could have possibly mistaken her for anything else.
Nina knew all this and yet somehow couldn't bring herself
to care. Any remorse was easily placated by the 0s and 1s
in her bank account and besides, she knew that everyone
was at heart guilty. Every person she killed was
responsible for taking at least one life.
Even Teri. Self-defense didn't make anyone less dead.
For Jack to hold such a grudge about it, well, it was
almost ironic. After all, there were a lot of broken
families because of him. Many wives whose husbands would
never come home because they'd been in the wrong place at
the wrong time.
Wrong place. Wrong time. A problem she never had.
His vendetta against her was hypocritical.
She left her latest source of income in the snow and as
she stripped off the gloves to leave with the gun, she
wished she'd brought an extra pair.
It was cold outside.
